OFI 017: FFA SAE Edition | Katie Pinke | Cows Not Required: 7 Reasons Your Kids Should Participate In FFA

SHOW NOTES

Katie Pinke is the creator and producer of The Pinke Post, a blog about family, food, farming and living on the prairie.  Katie has worked in agricultural communications in the past and has used that experience to grow her blog to high levels as well as become a public speaker in this arena.  Katie profiles women in agriculture every November with a new blog post every day.

In February of 2015 Katie wrote a post called “Cows Not Required: 7 Reasons Why Your Kids Should Participate In FFA.”  In this article Katie lists many positive reasons that kids should participate in FFA, citing her experience hiring FFA members in the professional world and seeing the difference that participation in FFA had made.  This article received significant attention, and is how I discovered Katie.  After reading it, it was apparent that she should be the interview I conducted to introduce the new FFA SAE segment to the Off Farm Income Podcast.

Katie’s son Hunter is currently in FFA in their small town home in North Dakota.  He is participating in an SAE project, and he is interviewed in an upcoming episode as well.  Katie is a wealth of information and inspiration, and I hope you enjoy the episode.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

• Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
• Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
• Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:
