OFI 260: The German Warrior Method Of Hog Farming | FFA SAE Edition | Katie Krehbiel | Inman High School FFA

SHOW NOTES:

INTRODUCING KATIE KREHBIEL!

You are probably wondering about the title of this episode.  Well, I have a lot of German heritage, and it is something that I am very interested in exploring.  Now, I ask all of my FFA guests what the mascot of their school is.  I always want to give a shout out to the school that my guest is from and their FFA Advisor.

When I asked Katie what her mascot was, she told me it was a Teuton.  I hear lots of things repeatedly when I ask this question: eagles, warriors, spartans, bears….you get the point.  But, I had never heard of a Teuton.  I promptly asked Katie what a Teuton was, and she told me that it was “some sort of German warrior.”

What!?  How did I not know of this?  Could these warriors from the 2nd Century be my ancestors?  I love what I get to learn creating this podcast, but this might have taken the cake.

So, the interview started off great and just got better.  Katie is raising a lot of pigs!  She has three sows and is farrowing twice per year.  For you non-pig folks, that is 30-40 pigs per farrowing on average.  She sells everything she can to 4H and FFA customers, and what does not go to them goes to her family and customers who want a butcher pig.

I hope you enjoy getting to know Katie Krehbiel.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

  • Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
  • Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
  • Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:

“Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive.”

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
