OFI 279: How To Move To Hawaii And Work In Agriculture | Matt Johnson | The Story Of Buying A One-Way Ticket To Hawaii And Starting Oahu Fresh

I am lucky enough to have an Aunt & Uncle who are part owners in a business that does a fair bit of work in Hawaii.  So, for the last two years Autumm, Hattie and I have been able to take a spring break trip to Oahu because they allow us to stay in the condominium that they live in while working in Hawaii.

At the end of our trip in 2016 I was kicking myself for not doing anything for the podcast while I was there.  There is so much agriculture and interest in agriculture in Hawaii that I had missed a golden opportunity.  I was determined not to let that happen when we went back this year.

Right after our 2016 trip I started researching agricultural entrepreneurship in Hawaii.  One of the first things that I found was a workshop that was being taught that summer at the Windward Community College in Kailua, which is on the windward side of Oahu.

The instructor was listed as Matt Johnson, and I was able to connect with him and correspond with him about agriculture in Hawaii.  It turned out that Matt was the owner of an agricultural company called Oahu Fresh.  He was good enough to have me to his facility and do an interview with me when we returned in 2017.  

Matt has a similar story to many people that we met in Hawaii.  He wanted to live there, and he bought a one-way plane ticket.  He knew that he was not returning to the mainland after he came over, so he “burned the boats”.

Where his story differs is that somehow he keeps finding himself working with farmers in one manner or another, even though that was not the way he grew up.  He had done this in Southeast Asia, and ultimately found himself doing this again in Hawaii.

So, while we were in Hawaii Autumm and Hattie indulged me, and I got to spend a day pursuing my podcast and agricultural interests.  I hope you enjoy hearing about working in agriculture, in paradise.
