OFI 282: Federal Funding To Start Your Agricultural Business | Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy | National Institute Of Food And Agriculture

 SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

This show is all about helping you use entrepreneurship to live where you want and to manage your farm or ranch more effectively.  We talk a lot about bootstrapping your business and looking at the skills we have already that enable us to farm and ranch effectively that we can translate into a service business.

So, you might think that this week’s episode just does not fit into that mold.  And, you might be right.  However, one of the most important things that I have learned since I became an entrepreneur is that once you open that first door, you just have no idea what other doors will open for you.

With that in mind, as you open the door to being an entrepreneur and pursuing your dreams other opportunities that you cannot imagine right now will present themselves to you.  In the position you are in currently there is just no way to know where they might take you or how large you future business endeavors might become.

If you start to grow or you come up with a business idea that is too big to “bootstrap”, today’s guest might just be the answer you are looking for.

Our guest today is Dr. Sonny Ramaswamy, the Director of the National Institute Of Food And Agriculture.  Part of the role of NIFA is to support entrepreneurship in agriculture.  I learned of NIFA while researching an episode for the D&B Supply Show Podcast.  I found a company from Nebraska called “Bugeater” who had received phase 1 funding from NIFA in the amount of $100,000 to explore the possibility of using crickets as a protein source for people in the United States.

Is your future company the next Bugeater?  Who knows.  But if you are, getting to know NIFA and what they do is an important piece of the puzzle.
