KEY IDEAS: 

Our guest today has a great story.  She has a passion for horses and has known for some time that she wants that to be her life.  When she was fourteen she started training horses and barrel racing.  When she was 16 she started teaching people to ride and selling horses.  She has been saving the proceeds from all of this with a horse business as her goal.

Today Audra Knapp is 21 years old and newly married.  How newly married?  Well, this episode was released on December 8th, and today is her wedding day!  Audra and her husband purchased a property together with room for horses, a barn and and riding arena.  Now Audra has a horse boarding and training facility.  And, she is teaching barrel racing to several customers.

Throughout the interview with Audra it was apparent that she had done her research.  She knew the demographics and growth patterns of population in her region and how that would contribute to her business.  She also had significant knowledge of the state laws in Ohio and how that impacted her liability in running her business on-site.

Did I mention that Audra was a high school rodeo queen in 2012?  This cowgirl knows the meaning of succeeding at a high level.  And at just 21 years of age she is on her way to her dream life of living rurally and working exclusively with horses.

ADVICE FROM AUDRA:

RISK: Audra says that you need to make yourself take risks.  She doesn’t recommend taking every risk that comes along or not hedging those.  However, if it is a risk that is necessary to making your business succeed, then take it.

SAFEGUARD: The horse community is one in which reputation is very important, and it is also one in which word of mouth spreads quickly.  So, Audra is adamant that you should make efforts to safeguard your reputation in this business.  She does that every day by exceeding her customer’s expectations and making sure that whey they step on her property they see a very clean and professional facility.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE AUDRA HAS EVER RECEIVED:
PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Having your own business is fantastic, and Audra loves the life that it offers her.  However, living on her own business facility also gives her the ability to do nothing but work.  She can always look at the property and see something that needs to be done.  But she stops herself so that she does not neglect her personal and family relationships.  So, she sets strict boundaries for herself.  That way there is a clear line between when she is working and when she is not.
