OFI 411: How To Make Money With Airbnb In The City Through Agri Tourism | Kunal Sampat | Raising-Chickens.Com

SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

Agriculture is a lot of things.  One of the things it is, is a community.  I love this community.  The reason I love it so much is that the people involved in it have a passion for it.  I think that people in agriculture, by percentage, have a greater passion for what they do than in any other industry.  You might want to know how I can say this.  It is simple.  The risks are high.  The monetary rewards are not guaranteed and not as high as many other professions.  Yet, people still clamor to find ways to be part of it.  That is passion.

Our guest today epitomizes this better than any other guest that I have interviewed.  I am not trying to say that others are not as passionate as Kunal Sampat.  However, I have not interviewed anyone else with his story.

Kunal was born and raised in Mumbai, India.  It is a huge city, and he lived right in the heart of it.  He did not have any exposure to agriculture and never gave the production of food a second thought.  Kunal eventually emigrated to the United States to go to college in the Northeast.  As this journey progressed in both college and then in employment he got more and more exposure to American agriculture.  He was hooked.

Because of Kunal’s field, he lives in one of the largest cities and metro areas in the United States, the Silicon Valley.  Kunal’s address is in San Jose, California.  To get to a farm you have to drive a long way, and you have to go through heavy traffic.  So, if the people who live in this metropolitan area are going to tour a farm, they have to have a lot of desire.  For a person living here who wants to farm, they really have to re-define what that term means and be innovative.

Kunal and his wife have found a way to create an interesting business, educate the people around them about agriculture and farm all while living in the city.  They started raising back yard chickens, selling eggs and promoting agri tourism, right in the heart of the city.  Kunal’s long term goal is to live on his own, larger farm and pursue agriculture full time.  While he is waiting to do that he is raising chickens, renting out a bedroom at his house as an Airbnb, and promoting the rental of his room by telling people they can get exposure to agriculture.  The combination is working very well.

Kunal has also created on online course for people who would like to replicate what he has done but that have no experience with chickens.  The course is called “Raising Backyard Chickens” and is available now.  Kunal is also offering all OFI listeners a $10 discount if you use the promo code “OFI10” when you sign up.

I hope you are as excited for Kunal and where he is taking his life as I am after listening to this episode.
