OFI 414: How To Capture A Niche Business | Rod Keiser | Hay Bale Banners

SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

There are several ways in which businesses are born.  Maybe my favorite method is when somebody has an “A’ha” moment and realizes that there is a niche that is not being filled.

Our guest today, Rod Keiser, did just that.  Rod was already in the printing business, and he already had experience with farming.  Then one day it dawned on him that there were round bales of hay laying in fields, next to high traffic areas all over his region of Nebraska.  He wondered why nobody was using this available space to advertise on.  The business Hay Bale Banners was born right at that moment.

Now Rod is creating round banners that attach the ends of round bales to advertise for people’s weddings, political campaigns, businesses, graduations, etc.

ADVICE FROM ROD:

LOCAL: Find your local resources and take advantage of what you have nearby to help you develop your business.

COURSE: Take an entrepreneurship course and get other people’s perspectives on how to grow your business.

RESEARCH: Do your market research before you launch your product or service.  If you find a niche that is not being filled, you are in good shape.

BEST ADVICE ROD HAS RECEIVED:

PERSISTENT: Don’t take “no” for an answer.  Keep trying if you have a product or service that you believe in.

PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS ROD SUCCEED:

SOLUTION ORIENTED: Rod stated that he listens intently to his customers to help them come up with solutions to their problems.
