OFI 540: Becoming A Livestock Handling Consultant | Curt Pate | Curt Pate Stockmanship

 SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

This is the second time in as many months that I have interviewed Curt Pate.  I first interviewed Curt for the D&B Supply Radio Show, talking about stress free livestock handling techniques.  When we finished that interview it was apparent that Curt had a great business utilizing the skills that he needed to raise cattle and work with horses effectively.  I asked him if he would be willing to be interviewed again to talk about the business side of what he does for all of the OFI listeners, and he agreed.

Curt has a great story of hard work, entrepreneurship and doors opening for him when all he was doing was trying to find a way to make supplemental income so he could ranch.  Today Curt goes all over the country and Canada talking about stress free livestock handling techniques.  He makes his living on the back of a horse, working with cattle and teaching people.  Not bad in this podcaster’s opinion.

ADVICE FROM CURT:

S&D: When you have a great idea that you are passionate about, and you have the talent to either make the product or provide the service, you had also better look at supply and demand.  Even if you have the skill and passion, if there is no demand or there is too much supply you are going to be hard pressed to make a living with this dream.

DEBT: Avoid it!  Curt knows what I know, debt will control you and stop you from making the decisions that are best for you and your business.  At one point Curt walked away from a lucrative sponsorship, working in the horse industry so he could work with cattle.  If he had been buried in debt, he could never have taken that risk.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE CURT HAS EVER RECEIVED:

PRINCIPLES: Always do the right thing and tell the truth.  That way you don’t have to remember anything when asked for your opinion in the future.  It will always be consistent, and you will never have to remember any lies.

PERSONAL HABIT:

CROWDS: Believe it or not, Curt enjoys speaking to large crowds and seeks out opportunities to do so.  He really had to work on his ability to interact with just a couple people, but when it comes to crowds he is a natural.
