OFI 511: A Heart For Agricultural Research | FFA SAE Edition | Katherine Fazzino | Rudder High School FFA

SHOW NOTES:

INTRODUCING KATHERINE FAZZINO!

Our guest today has a heart for research, understands practical application and is already making a name for herself with a large chemical company.  This, is why Katherine Fazzino is a national star finalist in agriscience this year.

Katherine’s family grows corn in the area of Bryan, Texas.  Due to climatic and other conditions, growing corn here can be challenging.  Katherine wanted to find a way to help, and this led her to her current research project.

Katherine identified a product produced by Helena Chemical called Hydra-Hume.  The product is supposed to help with nutrient uptake into the plant and also to preserve nitrogen and phosphorus in the soil.  Katherine saw that the benefits of this product would be obvious if it worked as advertised.  Therefore, Katherine set out to find out if this was the case.

Katherine has been conducting her research during her time at Texas A&M where she is studying agricultural economics.  She has determined that the product does work, and has measured a 25% increase in corn yield on the test plots where she applied Hydra-Hume.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

  • Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
  • Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
  • Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:

“Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive.”

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
