ADVICE FROM KATIE THORNTON:

Honesty: When it comes to dealing with your customers, be honest!  If there is something that you have never done before, do not lie or stretch the true to give the impression that you have.  Be transparent and make sure you are the correct fit for them. Dependability: You have to be dependable because your customers are “depending” on you.  So are their livestock.  This is one of the major reasons that Katie limits her service area to a 35 mile radius.  In Michigan in the Winter she might not be able to get a farm 50 miles away, twice per day, if a storm rolls in.  She needs to make sure she can be there. Exceed Expectations: Katie leaves the farms that she watches better than she found them.  When the owners return home there is nothing they have to do that night, and routine maintenance chores are done, and done better than they were when Katie started the job.

Diligence: Katie describes herself as a meticulous perfectionist. She does not allow perfectionism to stop her from moving forward or to cause resistance.  But, she makes sure that things are done right.

Ownership: Katie says that advice that she received early on in life is advice that she still uses today.  She “takes ownership” over whatever she does.  The “buck stops with her.”  She does not put responsibility on other people.  She makes sure that the job is done correctly and done well.
