KEY IDEAS:

Shawn has a great business wrapping hay bales.  His story of how he developed this business is the prototypical story.  After hiring a custom bale wrapper to work for him, he thought that the business looked interesting.  However, the closest custom operator was 80 miles away.  So, he started a business…..and it is going well.

Shawn did something very good with this business.  He recognized that it looked simple, but that did not make him think the business did not have value.  This is true of several businesses.  They do not have to be over complicated or unbelievably difficult to be profitable.

ADVICE FROM SHAWN SUESS:

• Research what you are going to do, and then research it some more.
• Find a good Ag Lender that will work with you, if you are going to borrow.
• Do not procrastinate by trying to make sure that everything is perfect.  Start and perfect your business along the way.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT SHAWN SUESS HAS RECEIVED:

• Shawn said that he has received so much advice that it is hard to pin down one thing.  However, he believes that all of the encouragement to farm that he has received from older farmers has been invaluable.

PERSONAL HABIT THAT ADS TO SHAWN SUESS’S SUCCESS:

• When I asked Shawn this question, he said he believed that “never giving up” was what ads the most to his success.  Sometimes people give up right when they are close to success.  So, don’t give up.
