Mark Davis has a great story that is a more common way than you might think to become an entrepreneur.  He worked for a company in IT for many years only to be laid off.  He had a complete change of philosophy in how to make a living.  He decided to work for himself, and to do something that he truly loved.

The natural fit for him was bees.  He had been involved in bee keeping in one manner or another since he was a child.  He knew that he loved it, and he saw a need for what he had to offer.  In designing his business he decided to form his company as a non-profit organization because he was going to seek support from the community.

His mission is to have 1,000 hives at 1,000 residences of his community within five years in an effort to help restore bees and teach about agriculture.  He is well on his way to his goal, and now he selling more products and services than when he began.

ADVICE FROM MARK DAVIS:

Have a thick skin.  There are going to be “nay sayers” anytime you do anything associated with entrepreneurship or risk.  So, be able to continue pursuing your goals even when those who you care about doubt you can be successful.

Fail Forward – You are going to make mistakes.  Make sure to turn those mistakes into positives.  Learn something each time you fail and realize that it is part of the growing process.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT MARK DAVIS HAS RECEIVED:

Work as though everything depends on you.  Basically have the attitude of “the buck stops here.”
