OFI 1932: How To Turn Writing Into Off-Farm Income | Rachel Gabel | The Fence Post Magazine | Re-Cap episode

On tomorrow’s Ag Business Episode I am profiling a freelance, agricultural writer.  This is one of my favorite forms of off-farm income.  For today’s re-cap episode I went back to episode #1233 and an interview I did with Rachel Gabel of the “The Fence Post Magazine”.  In this interview we talked a lot about how freelance writers can get started and be successful, but we did it from the editor’s perspective.  I thought this was the perfect tie in for tomorrow’s show where we will hear this from a writer’s perspective.

The original Show Notes can be found below:

Writing, whether it be as a fiction author, a novelist or a freelancer is one of my favorite methods of off-farm income creation that I cover.  Maybe it is because when I first started this show I interviewed an author and it gave so much credibility to the concept that I was pursuing, or maybe it is because I admire people who can write for a living, but I am a fan.

On today’s show Rachel Gabel joins us to talk writing, raising cattle and raising goats.  Rachel lives and ranches in Northeast Colorado, and she has been in that general vicinity all of her life.  Growing up there and ranching there has given her special credibility with the people who read her words, and it has allowed her to write about some topics that only a few people would be accepted discussing.  She primarily writes for The Fence Post Magazine, and she has been doing so since she was a young teenager.

Writing is in Rachel’s blood, and even if there was not a freelance assignment to be writing about she would be writing about something else.  As a matter of fact, she does do that.  She has written multiple books, and in our interview today she was kind enough to give away a copy of “Still Good: The Faces Of Family Agriculture” to one of you lucky listeners.

If you have the ability to write this is an unbelievably valid and beneficial form of off-farm income.  It can be done from anywhere as long as you have a telephone.  It can be done on a flexible schedule so that you can break away for work on the farm if need be, and it keeps you on the farm or ranch so that you can be there when that need arises.

I am happy to welcome Rachel to the show and to have her tell you a bit about how you turn your writing ability into your source of off-farm income.
