Show Notes

We spent the first part of this episode addressing a negative review I received on iTunes.  I was really appreciative of the review, even though it was negative.  The reviewer expressed frustration that I was advertising my marketing workbook and interviewing high school students about their supervised agricultural experiences.

I thought a lot about this critique and whether or not the reviewer was right.  I decided that our show is about business, and that Off-Farm Income is a business.  Therefore, there has to be an income generating model or the podcast will cease to exist.

So, I was very appreciative because as time and episodes go by, things speed up and I don’t necessarily look back like I should.  This caused to look back and critically think about what I was doing with the podcast.  In the end, I decided that I would keep airing the commercial, and of course I would continue to interview FFA students.

I have a much clearer picture of how the Off-Farm Income Podcast is a business that will help me stay on the farm than I did when I first started out.  Without this review causing me to take a deep look at what I was doing, I probably would not have had this revelation.

Speaking of business, the second part of the show was a big announcement that I have been alluding to for weeks.  Starting on 1/14/17 I am the host of a brand new podcast and radio show.  The name of the show is the D&B Supply Show.

D&B Supply is a farm and ranch retailer in Oregon and Idaho as well as online.  I have shopped at D&B Supply for many years, and now I am thrilled to be a part of their organization.

Nothing is changing at the Off-Farm Income Podcast.  However, a huge change for me personally is happening.  I am in the process of selling Idaho Gopher Control.  As you probably know, Idaho Gopher Control is the business that was the vessel that led me to starting an agricultural podcast about entrepreneurship.

I am transitioning into creating all of my off-farm income as an agricultural broadcaster and marketer.  I do not have the time to focus like I need to on the broadcasting and continue with the gopher extermination business.  So, I am selling the business to my employee John.  I am thrilled to be selling it to he and his wife.  It is going to work great for them, and our customers will continue to be taken care of greatly.

The gopher business has been the basis of my credibility as a podcast host for the past two years.  Now, I will have several new experiences including selling a business and learning about broadcasting on radio.

If you live in Pendleton, Baker or LaGrande, Oregon Or Boise or Twin Falls, Idaho you can listen to the D&B Supply Show on the radio at the times listed below.  If not, or if you cannot listen when it is broadcast, you can catch the longer podcast episode on the D&B Supply Show Soundcloud site.

I hope you will tune in.  This show gives me the opportunity to really dive into specific farming and ranching topics.  For example, in our second episode I am interviewing a state veterinarian all about new laws restricting the use of antibiotics in feed.  This show is going to benefit you from a very practical standpoint.
