OFI 1848: Create A Full Time Ag Business On The Rural/Urban Interface | Daryl Mast | Doorstep Dairy | Re-Cap Episode

On tomorrow’s Ag Business Episode we are going to be profiling an entrepreneur who transitioned from a full-time corporate career to being a full-time entrepreneur.  In the spirit of what I normally do, I wanted to pull an episode from the archives that tied in with tomorrow’s theme.  I believe that this interview with Daryl Mast of Doorstep Dairy does so nicely.  From the transition to the family legacy, this episode has it all.

The original show notes are below:

SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

Daryl Mast has a phenomenal business near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  I think he has entrepreneurship in his blood a little bit, but that has helped him find a business serving farmers and bringing locally grown food to the residents who live nearby.

As a benefit to the rest of us, Daryl has created an example that we can follow to live and work the way that he does.

Doorstep Dairy is the name of Daryl’s business, and he has grown this business quite a bit since he started in 2010.  This business is replicable anywhere that farming is close to a population center.  And, start up costs do not need to be that high.

This episode is full of great advice from Daryl and pearls of wisdom on how he started and grew this business.  I hope this is the one for you!

ADVICE FROM DARYL:

Learn to say “no”: this is especially true in this business as Daryl points out.  In order to be profitable Daryl has to say no to would be customers who live outside of his designated delivery zone.  If he says nothing but yes, he risks not being able to serve anyone because it is not a good business model.

Similar Businesses: do you know of or can you find a similar business to this somewhere else in the country?  Hint: You Do Now!  Then talk to them for advice on how to get started.

Money: don’t borrow this stuff.  It makes you make bad decisions, and if your business does not work out you will still be paying for it years in the future.

Failure: everyone fears failing.  Learn how to manage this fear, and do not let it control you.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE DARYL HAS RECEIVED:

Find something you are passionate about.  Daryl described this perfectly.  He is passionate about serving customers.  His delivery business allows him to serve customers and thus, serve his passion.  Do not think that you had to identify a business type that is your passion, just how you passion manifests itself.

PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS DARYL SUCCEED:

Daryl is a communicator, and he makes it a priority to be communicating with his customers, no matter where he is.

BOOKS/RESOURCES:

Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose is the book that Daryl recommends to anyone going into the delivery business.  He found it inspirational, and it helped him to truly identify his passion.
