OFI 258: Teaching Your Kids About Entrepreneurship | Help Your Children To Have Options Avoid Career Burnout

Show Notes

I loved doing this episode.  There are topics that I talk about that are related to entrepreneurship and agriculture.  All of these I have experience in, and I believe in.  But none of these drives me like what we are talking about today.

My parents never really talked with me about work, career, etc.  I am not sure why.  My mom wanted me to “reach for the stars” and do whatever made me happy.  Although, I made her grimace when I chose law enforcement.  My dad never really talked with me about any career pursuit.  He and my mom insisted that I go to college, and I am glad that they did.  However, I had no direction when that time came and really got lucky that I had discovered an interest in cattle and wound up at a community college with an agriculture program.  That started me on this path.

What my parents never did was discuss the general topics that surround your work life.  They did not discuss entrepreneurship with me for sure.  My mom would never have done that.  She wanted me to get a “good job” with security, and she desired that because that is what she believed was the best for me.  My dad was an entrepreneur, and he changed businesses frequently, later went back to school and then later changed jobs frequently.  He obviously never found what made him happy in the work field, but we never discussed the fact that I might find myself in a job or career that was unsatisfying to me or what to do if that happened.

I cannot promise you that by becoming an entrepreneur that you or you kids can avoid dissatisfaction in any particular career choice.  When I became a police officer I thought I was the smartest person in the world.  I thought that I had found a career that was exciting and fun for me, and I thought it would always be that way.  Well, it was, but not forever.  People get older and change.  Priorities change.  When I finally admitted that to myself is when I started pursuing entrepreneurship.

However, it took me several years to believe that entrepreneurship was possible for me, and to finally start.  I can’t help but think that if my parents had warned me about how this can happen in a career, and that entrepreneurship was one of my options I might have saved myself those few years.  I don’t blame them.  They were not from that generation.  As a matter of fact, they were from the last generation that believed that you start with a company and retire from that same company.  They did not live that way, but they believed they were the exception, not the new rule.

So, the biggest driver in my entrepreneurial career is to set an example for and teach my daughter, Hattie. I want her to see me have a lifestyle that is totally unconventional.  I want her to see that this is secure and highly satisfying.  I want her to see that we can have a fun and happy life with me being there when she gets on and off the school bus every day.  And most important, I want her to think of entrepreneurship as a viable option for her either when she is ready to enter the career field or if she becomes dissatisfied with her initial career choice.

No matter how much success I find through entrepreneurship, I want her to believe this is a good option.  So, I take every opportunity to try and demonstrate and teach her about this.  I want to share with you the ways that I do that in this episode.
