OFI 1757: How To Start A Side Business In The Horse World As A Single Mom | Sarah Marie Banowetz | Sarah Marie’s Tack Services | Re-Cap Episode

On tomorrow’s ag business episode we are profiling a family business with a long legacy of building saddles for the regular market and for custom customers.  This is a business that is so interesting for the folks who want to live in the world of horses.

Of course with saddle ownership comes saddle maintenance, and sometimes it is easier to outsource that work.  So, I thought for today’s re-cap episode it would make sense to go back to this interview that I did with Sarah Banowetz talking about her small business bringing old saddles back to life.

The original show notes are below:

SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

There are a lot of compelling things about today’s guest.  I could start with Sarah Banowetz being promoted to supervisor of the oil testing team at the Cat dealership where she works.  And of course I could talk about her unreal talent for bringing old saddles and other tack back to life.  But I would have to make sure and mention how she is a model of perseverance and self-sufficiency for her daughter who she is raising as a single mom.  You are going to enjoy this interview.

ADVICE FROM SARAH:

SAME PAGE: Before you start work for a customer make sure that you have communicated clearly and you are on the same page.  You don’t want them to be expecting something different when the job is done.

PAPER: Along the lines of the advice above, get things written down on paper and agreed to.  That way if there is a surprise at the end, you will know exactly what was agreed to.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE SARAH HAS EVER RECEIVED:
TRUE: Stay true to what it is that you want.  Don’t chase money or some other motivation that leads you into something that gives you no pleasure.  If you are going to work for yourself, make it something you enjoy.

PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS SARAH SUCCEED:

METICULOUS: Sarah credits her attention to detail as allowing her to do great work in this business.  When I asked what tool you need to get started she said a toothbrush.  Now that is is attention to detail!

BOOK RECOMMENDATION:

This is one that I recommended for Sarah.  I think it will serve women in business very well.
