OFI 524: Competitive Cheese Making At The Prison Dairy (really) | FFA SAE Edition | Kaleb Starr | Powell County High School FFA

SHOW NOTES

INTRODUCING KALEB STARR!

So, I was standing at my booth at the National FFA Convention, looking at the back of all the blue jackets wondering where all these 69,000 students came from when I spied one with Deer Lodge, Montana on the back of it.  I was naturally wearing my Montana State University hat, so I had to at least tell this young man about the coincidence.

That is what led me to meet Kaleb Starr, and ultimately to find out about his awesome supervised agricultural experience.  Kaleb lives in Deer Lodge, Montana which I know from my time in that great state is the home to the state prison.  What I did not know is that the prison operates a dairy, which is not a widespread industry in Montana.

Kaleb, as a senior in high school works at the prison dairy, sometimes with the inmates.  And, he has significant responsibilities there.  This involvement in the dairy industry piqued Kaleb’s interests, and he started making cheese.  Now he is involved in competitive cheese making, and he is really good at it.  He is trying create the perfect cheddar!  I think you will really enjoy getting to know this young man in this episode.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

  • Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
  • Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
  • Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:

“Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive.”

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
