OFI 605: Three Chapter Presidents And An Ag Advisor In One Family | FFA SAE Edition | Tanner Stevens | Yukon High School FFA

SHOW NOTES

INTRODUCING TANNER STEVENS!

As the title says, our guest today is the third chapter president from his family at Yukon High School in Oklahoma.  Tanner has followed both of his sisters into the FFA and into the role of president.  If that were not enough FFA talk around the dinner table, his father is his FFA advisor.  Their house is probably painted blue!

Tanner started showing pigs at age four, and it stuck.  He has continued showing pigs and getting better and better at his craft.  This has led him to more and more success, ultimately culminating in him winning two state proficiency awards.

Tanner’s experience showing pigs led him to showing even more animals like cattle, sheep, goats and chickens.  He is now running a large show pig operation, raising 20 sows, at his school farm.  They are able to sell the newborn pigs to other students who want to show pigs around the state.

Tanner is also involved in agriscience for his supervised agricultural experience.  He has done five agriscience projects over the past four years with another in progress now.  Tanner also gets to work on a project called Bluestem, studying grazing and grassland management.  Tanner is currently involved in creating a new grass for Oklahoma’s specific climate.  He is hoping to yield plants that are four feet tall with a protein content that is equal to alfalfa.

In addition to all of this, Tanner has a job working on a farm with some very unique animals like Zebu cattle, Zebras and other exotics.

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

  • Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
  • Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
  • Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:

“The future of American agriculture depends on the involvement and investment in America’s youth, In order to prepare for the population of tomorrow, we need to encourage America’s youth today, and show that careers in agriculture are profitable, rewarding, and vital.”.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue
