OFI 2021: Don’t Forget To Invest In Yourself – The Chief Decision Maker In Your Enterprise

Today’s episode was inspired by a Tuesday show I did back in 2019, #662.  I will be discussing getting yourself to a conference this year as a matter of pivotal importance to the growth and sustainability of your business and/or farm enterprise.

The show notes from #662 that inspired this are listed below:

Tuesday Episode

If you are going to use entrepreneurship to help you create the farm dream you are looking for you will eventually have to leave agriculture.  What do I mean?  Well, many of the concepts that you are going to need to know to create a successful business in this day and age are going be taught be people that are not involved in farming.  So, you are going to have to go learn it from them, and then translate it back to agriculture.

Podcasting Remotely:

So, for this episode (because I am committed to keeping these Tuesday episodes fresh) I am recording this on my handheld recorder in a hotel room in Florida.  I am in Florida because I am practicing what I preach.  The day that this episode is released I am starting a four day conference on podcasting.  I can promise you that farming is not going to be discussed at this conference.  But everything that I learn is going to come back to my podcast to make it better.

So, I am making this trip all about fun and farming.  Doing this for a living is extremely fun, so it is easy to mix work and pleasure.  Also, I brought Autumm and Hattie with me, and that is a lot of fun as well.  So, while they tolerate me mixing in work with fun like typing up these show notes in our hotel room tonight, I get to learn a lot and help to produce a much better show for you.

We started by flying into Miami.  Believe it or not this was the cheapest flight we could find.  So, we flew into Miami to start the trip and rented a car to come north.  While we were there I had my eyes open for agricultural topics that I could find in the city.  I found one.  Iguana control!  Wow!  In the are we were in there were iguanas all over.  I will be following up these observations to find you a great interview with an iguana control specialist.

We drove north to the Tampa Bay area on Saturday in preparation for an “on-location” interview I had set up for Sunday at the Florida Aquarium.  A gentleman named Stephen Schwanebeck had made contact with me through the Off-Farm Income Facebook Page and it turned out that he was interested in what I was doing and had his own Facebook page about farming.

So, on Sunday I was able to meet with him at the aquarium and do an on-site interview about his journey and where he wants to go in the future with farming.

Thank you all for tuning in and enjoy the episode!
