OFI 680: Creating Off-Farm Income In The United Kingdom And Working With The Whole World | Alison Teare | Social-Jungle

SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

The world is becoming smaller everyone, and I have absolute proof of that in today’s episode.  Just a couple of weeks ago I was contacted by a person named Alison Teare on LinkedIn.  She reached out to me and let me know that she wanted to connect, she was involved in agriculture, she had her own podcast and she had her own business.  (If you tuned into episode #678 about using LinkedIn to build your network, you will recognized that she did exactly what I am advising people to do regarding the message function there).

Alison did not merely send me a connection request, but she also followed it up with the reasons why she wanted to connect, I was intrigued by who she was.  This led me to reading her profile on LinkedIn and finding out that she lives in the United Kindgom.

The fact that she lives in the U.K. really piqued my interest.  Ever since our trip to Europe in the summer of 2018 I have wanted to find a way to profile agriculture there and contrast it to the United States.  This was my opportunity, and I reached out to Alison so see if she would be willing to be a guest on the show.

Alison and her husband farm on the Isle Of Man which is in the middle of the Irish Sea about halfway between Belfast, Ireland and Blackpool, England.  They raise purebred Galloway cattle and sell seed stock in Europe.

Alison’s husband, John, farms full-time, and Alison works in the marketing world.  A few years back Alison and her business partner, Simon Haley, kept getting requests to speak to agricultural communities about how they could use social media to create niche markets for themselves and to sell their farm products direct to consumers.  This is when their business, Social-Jungle, was born.

Today Alison and Simon work with clients all over the world due the opportunities that the internet has created.  Alison and Simon live in separate places, and that is how they work together as well.  I asked Alison about working with people in different countries and understanding the societal differences.  She told me that the fundamentals of using social media to market are still the same, but the clients are the experts on how make that work in their particular culture.
