OFI 740: How To Buy Farm Equipment With No Money Out Of Pocket | Russ Elsberry | Elsberry Custom Combining

SHOW NOTES

KEY IDEAS:

There are a lot of hurdles to overcome if you want to begin farming from scratch.  There is always the cost of land to contend with, but that can be mitigated by leasing or even custom farming.  What about equipment?  What creative methods to obtain very expensive equipment are out there?  Well, it is the job of this podcast to uncover creative solutions for you.  I believe we have done that with today’s episode.

Russ Elsberry, the owner of Elsberry Custom Combining, will be joining us today to talk about his business and how it got started.  Along the way, he is going to tell us about a strategic partnership that he entered into with a seed company that resulted in him purchasing his first combine with no money out of pocket, no loan and having it paid for by the work he earned through the partnership.

This is a fascinating look at a very common problem – how to purchase equipment.

ADVICE FROM RUSS:

Approach companies in the industry you are striving to work in, and propose something creative.  You never know where it might go, and how it might not only help you get equipment but get your business and reputation started.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE RECEIVED:

This is pretty simple for Russ.  His mom and dad raised him to work hard, and he does.  He can still remember his mother telling his father to teach he and his brothers how to work.

PERSONAL HABIT:

Russ cited two personal habits that help him to succeed.  First, he has a work ethic (see above).  Second, he pays attention to advice from others.  It is important to be inquisitive and to really listen to what people who have been there before you are saying.
