SHOW NOTES

Introducing Emily Sampson!

Every now and then on this show I run across a business that you would really just think is a fantasy.  Yet, here is somebody who is doing it and doing it well.  These are the kinds of businesses that a million people have sat around saying “I wish I could do this for a living” and then comes along someone with the vision and courage to actually do it.

I am writing this on a Sunday afternoon in July.  I can imagine that there are thousands of people just his afternoon, right now, lounging on ski boats or unhappily loading up their boats to drive home from the lake and prepare for work tomorrow.  So many of these folks are thinking or saying out loud that they wish they could just water ski and spend every day on the lake.  Our guest today has figured out how to do that.

Emily Sampson is a professional water skier and comes from a family with a tradition of loving being on the water.  Her father teaches people how to water ski as a side business, and now she is part of this work.  Emily plans on taking it to the next level and would love to see herself doing this full time at some point.  My fingers are crossed that she can.

Her time in the FFA has given her the ability to see what she is doing through the lens of agriculture.  She understands the importance of the water that she skis on as a resource for farmers and sees how what she does educates people about the importance of the resource and creates a more sustainable system.

Support FFA

Donate to FFA – One way that FFA students are able to start small businesses is through an FFA grant of $1,000.  In 2014, 141 FFA students received these grants.  With your donations, more students can get this head start – pay it forward.

REASONS TO DONATE TO FFA:

  • Only 2% of Americans grow and raise most of the food and livestock consumed by the other 98% as well as the rest of the world.  FFA is providing the needed education, training and resources to Americans that will carry that torch forward and insure that America continues to have inexpensive, quality food.
  • Rural Communities will rely on entrepreneurship in the future for population growth and job creation.  The FFA is a major catalyst to that entrepreneurial growth.
  • Farmers, ranchers and those working in agriculture give the rest of America incredible amounts of freedom because the search for food is as simple as going to the grocery store:

“Because American farmers are able to provide for so many of us, they give more and more of us the freedom to pursue goals and livelihoods beyond growing the food we need to survive.”

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack
