OFI 1317: How To Create An Agricultural Subscription Box Business | Heather Cassill | Kids Sonder Agriculture Unboxed

What is your definition of being a teacher, and how do you think it is possible to follow your passion for teaching?  This is an interesting profession as it seems to only have one definition and two outlets.  Definitionally teachers are in a classroom having one one one interactions with pupils and providing them with knowledge.  And the only two outlets seem to be in conventional public schools or in lesser paying roles as private school teachers.  Somehow, the education system has been able to really own that term of “teacher” and keep the definition narrow.

Where does that narrow definition leave the rest of us who want to impart wisdom and information but don’t want to conform to the two outlets and definition described above?  What if we want a different lifestyle or a different income than is provided in those traditional roles?  How do we go about that?

The answer is to define what it means to be an educator on your own terms and then come up with a way to make that into your career.  This is exactly what our guest, Heather Cassill, has done with Kids Sonder Agriculture Unboxed.

Heather grew up in agriculture, and has found herself as an agricultural educator for many years now.  This first began for her through the 4H and working with county extension agencies in Kentucky where her husband was going to graduate school in equine nutrition.  However, both of them had grown up in Northeast Ohio and eventually found their way back home.  There were not positions in extension open for Heather there, but she still wanted to teach people about agriculture.  This is when she discovered the subscription box business.

This business is made up of people who are putting together activity boxes to help parents and homeschoolers teach their kids about a myriad of subjects.  Heather wondered if there was anyone doing this on the topic of agriculture.  She did her research and discovered that there was no competition in this space.  So, she decided to start her own!  That was the birth of Kids Sonder Agriculture Unboxed.

Today Heather is reaching people in agriculture who want to start teaching their 7-11 year old children about all aspects of ag with different activity boxes.  She is also reaching families who are a generation or two removed from the farm who don’t want their children to not understand what their family legacy in agriculture was all about.  She is building a very interesting business, and she has plans to scale up her production, hire employees and expand her product offerings.  You are going to find this interview very interesting.
