KEY IDEAS: 

One of the key ways to find a way to succeed in business is to improve on something that is already being done.  Our guest today, Tony Bottoms, plus his wife and cousin have formed a company to do just that.  Except with this company, the product is a horse.

B&B Equine was formed to try and fill a gap that Tony and his partners saw in the world of Appaloosa horses.  In the episode Tony explains that at a point in the past that after horses were taken to the show ring they would go back out to the range for work.  However, in today’s show environment the Appaloosa breed has got away from that.

Tony and his partners see a separation of working Appaloosa horses and those used for show.  They are attempting to breed Appaloosa’s that people can purchase and use as dual purpose animals.  Show horses are expensive, and so are good working horses.  Many people get priced out of either showing or working horses because they cannot afford to purchase one or more of each type.

B&B Equine is attempting to make both worlds accessible to people of average means by breeding a horse that will do as good in the ring as it does in the field.

ADVICE FROM TONY:

FRANK: Tony talks quite a bit about working with partners.  He suggests that even if it is uncomfortable to have very frank discussions with your partners so that everyone is clear on what your goals are.

PLAN: Tony is a planner, and he likes to have everything mapped out as much as possible.

BEST BUSINESS ADVICE TONY HAS RECEIVED:

HONESTY: Being honest with people, no matter if it ruffles feathers.  In the long run this will help to avoid conflicts.

PLAN: Planning is something that Tony does naturally, and he couldn’t emphasize it enough.
